A Sheffield animal charity is seeking volunteers as part of an initiative to support the city’s first Move More Month.

The Sheffield branch of the Retired Greyhound Trust is inviting those keen to get behind the world-first physical activity challenge to visit the chairty’s farm to walk the greyhounds in their care - all whilst earning ‘minutes’ towards their final score.

Walkers can follow maps for a variety of walking trails around the farm ranging from one to five miles in length.

The challenge, which began on July 1, will see particpants across the city taking part in physical activity throughout the month, with their active ‘minutes’ being tracked and clocked up by an app on their smartphones, culminating in a final score.

The brand new, and completely free, Move More Sheffield app is available to download now.

Sheffield’s Move More Month is aiming to get 50,000 people in the city on the move during July to see how many combined minutes the city can clock up.

Roy and Lynda Cattlin run the farm, which houses the Sheffield branch of the Retired Greyhound Trust, at Rotherham Gate Lodge in Wortley. Along with their team of volunteers, they dedicate their time to finding homes for retired greyhounds when their racing days are over. Since its formation in 2006, the Trust, which is supported by Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, has found new homes for well over 1,000 retired greyhounds.

Roy said: “We’re proud to be supporting Move More Month.

“Volunteering to walk our wonderful retired greyhounds is a fantastic way to get out and about in the fresh air, enjoy some low-impact exercise and clock up Move More points at the same time!

“Our walking trails have beautiful views and vary in length and difficulty so there is something for everyone. It’s a sociable, rewarding and free way to increase the amount of physical activity you do - while enabling you to help a local charity.”

As part of Move More Month, the initiative has announced a local derby, between Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, inviting those taking part in the challenge to register their minutes to count as ‘goals’ to put their favourite team in with a chance of winning the first ever Move More Month cup.

Walking maps are available from the Sheffield RGT. Greyhound walking takes place daily between 9.30am and 1pm. Visit www.sheffieldretiredgreyhounds.co.uk for details.
