Voters could be excluded if they are not registered

THOUSANDS of Rotherham people could be barred from voting if Prime Minister Gordon Brown decides on an election in the next few weeks.

Just 65 per cent of households in the town have so far returned an electoral registration form - which means around 28,000 households will be unable to vote in a snap general election should the Prime Minister decided to call one.

Forms were sent out to every household in September to gather information for the new edition of the register of electors which will be published by December 1, 2007.

Today election officials warned that unless the forms are returned straight away, it may be too late for them to be included on the register for a snap election.
