Volunteers plea for first aid project

VOLUNTEERS are needed to learn first-aid skills and help save South Yorkshire lives.

The Ambulance Service wants people for its First Responder schemes in Maltby, Thurcroft, and Dinnington.

Applicants could be giving life-saving care to members of their communities in emergency medical situations, such as heart attacks, in the vital minutes before an ambulance arrives.

They will trained in cardio pulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automatic external defibrillator, which delivers a controlled electric shock to restart the heart.

Emma Scott, of Yorkshire Ambulance Service, said: “We know that in many medical emergencies the first few minutes are critical. If effective treatment can be performed within those first few minutes, lives can be saved and disability reduced.

“This is especially true for heart attacks and injuries that have caused someone to lose consciousness.”

An open evening is being held on Wednesday September 26 at the Ambulance Service Control Centre on Moorgate, Rotherham.

Full training will be given to successful applicants who need to be over 18, fit and hold a full driving licence with no more than three penalty points.
