Village opens its gardens

ReSIDENTS from a South Yorkshire village are gearing up to show off their blooms at their annual gardening trail.

Villagers from Thorpe Salvin near Rotherham, are holding the event on July 23 and 24.

It began in 1980 when the villagers entered the Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘Village in Bloom’ competition.

Thorpe Salvin no longer puts itself forward for large scale gardening awards but in keeping with the spirit of Village in Bloom, villagers still open their gardens to the public for two days each July to raise money for local charities.

Lesley Hayes, chairwoman of Thorpe in Bloom, said: “We’re looking forward to meeting all the visitors to our village – faces old and new.

“it’s always a delight to be able to share tips with those who share our interest.”
