The 38-year-old was introduced to the local media yesterday after being appointed as Darren Ferguson’s successor on Wednesday evening.

Not dissimilar to his predecessor, McCann’s drive and intensity came across loud and clear.

And the former Peterborough United boss - who has been tasked with getting his new club into play-off contention - was also crystal clear on the style of play that Rovers fans can expect when the League One season gets underway on August 4.

“They can expect a team that’s going to work hard, first and foremost,” said McCann.

“They’re going to run and they’re going to be fit.

“But also they’re going to be very pleasing on the eye, they’re going to be expansive and they’re going to have full backs who are going to be very brave and high, getting forward and getting crosses into the box.

“They’re going to get movement in midfield and centre halves wanting to split and receive the ball from the goalkeeper.

“The identity is going to stay. It’s not about if we lose a game, let’s change it.

“We stick with it.

“Let’s keep moving the ball and moving it quickly.

“It’s about possession with a purpose, not possession for the sake of it. Possession with a purpose to create chances for our forward players.

“If we lose it, we want to win it back as quickly as possible.

“The boys will see that all week about the way I want to play.

“But it’s also about having that Plan B so if it’s not working in a game we can flexibly change and the boys are well drilled into that as well.”

McCann oversaw training at Cantley Park for the first time yesterday and over the course of the next fortnight will hold one-to-one meetings with the entire playing squad.

“The boys looked sharp and they looked at it. John Schofield put on a good session,” said McCann.

“It was more of a brief introduction to me for the players and the staff, just to try and get to know them.

“I’ll do that over the next couple of weeks. I’ll get the chance to sit down individually with my staff and my players and find out a little bit more about them.

“I know the players and what they’re capable of but I don’t know them personally and that’s something I want to do.

“The trip away next week [to La Manga] will be perfect for that.”

McCann won 42 of his 105 games in charge of Posh before being sacked in February.

He has signed a rolling contract.
