VIDEO: We let the fans down at Bury, admits Sheffield United's Jose Baxter

Jose Baxter admitted Sheffield United, who will tomorrow allow Bob Harris to join League One rivals Fleetwood Town on loan, had '˜let down' their supporters after last night's shock defeat at Bury.

The result, which leaves Nigel Adkins’ side ninth in the table with only 15 matches remaining, was described as “frustrating” and “disappointing” by the visitors’ manager when he emerged from a no-holds-barred post-match inquest.

Although Adkins insisted the exact details of his address to the players “would remain private”, Baxter told The Star: “We can only say sorry. It was a bad performance. The fans are going home and I know, because I’m a football fan myself, that when your team loses it ruins your week.

“We are letting them down a little bit too much at the moment.”

United, who suffered their first away defeat in the competition since October when Craig Jones scored midway through the first-half, remained five points off the top-six pace after Millwall and Southend were also beaten.

But Baxter, the former Everton midfielder, acknowledged: “We can’t be going into this league worrying about other teams. No disrespect to Bury, because they played well, but we’ve got to be winning games like this.

“It hurts, it’s very hurtful in fact because we should be up there. We know that.

“We can still do it, I’m sure of that, but there are no excuses for us out there because it was a poor performance from us.”

“We need, to start with, to get two or three wins,” Baxter added.

“When you do that your confidence comes back and you start getting on the ball more. But we’re not going to shy away from anything. We know that wasn’t good enough and we’ll face up to that.”

Harris, meanwhile, is expected to spend the rest of season at Highbury after recovering from injury. The defender, previously of Town’s neighbours Blackpool, has not featured since December’s game against Oldham Athletic. Although Harris’ temporary transfer has yet to be officially processed, it is understood to have been provisionally agreed before United’s visit to Gigg Lane.
