The visitors, who hadn't won in the league since beating Derby County in mid-September, had taken the lead against the run of play through Tom Lawrence but were quickly pegged back by an equaliser from Gary Hooper.

After a decent start to the second half Wednesday lost momentum and struggled to create enough of a spark to break down a disciplined Town defence, before Luke Chambers grabbed an unlikely winner for Mick McCarthy's men with a few minutes remaining.

Carvalhal said his side 'lacked energy' and that they 'didn't pose a threat'

"I must accept that we didn't perform at our level and I hope that will be an exception. We were lacking energy and hit a wall. We must be more dynamic and have a different attitude.

"They were very compact and, to open up this kind of team, we need to move the ball very well and create spaces.

"Our players were not in the same shape they have been in before. We didn't pose a real threat to the opponents, but we didn't deserve to lose the game. We didn't deserve to win, either.

"We have the same points as last season at this moment, but of course we expect to have more."
