But today was not about contract talks for the club stalwart, instead it was rightly about well-deserved celebrations for ‘Hecky’, his jubilant players and coaching staff, as well as the club’s loyal supporters after a rollercoaster season to remember.

Thousands of Barnsley supporters took to the streets to celebrate the South Yorkshire’s epic promotion back to the Championship after their fine 3-1 win over Millwall at Wembley on Sunday in the League One Play-off final.

A hastily arranged open top bus parade was organised to toast the club’s memorable season, one which also saw the club win the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

The parade bus, packed with the Reds’ squad, weaved its way through Barnsley town centre and culminated with joyous celebrations from the victorious Reds’ squad outside Barnsley Town Hall.

Heckingbottom, his staff and players showcased their two trophies and celebrated with supporters on a history-making day in the town.

“What an incredible season it has been for everyone associated with our Football Club,” reflected Heckingbottom.

Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr Linda Burgess, added: “The club’s promotion to the Championship is wonderful finale to a very successful season.

“The Reds are now back where they belong and we wish them continued success in the next season.”
