The 10k race took crowds of runners from Arundel Gate in the city centre, along Penistone Road to Hillsborough and back again.
Elite athletes took part and winning the race at his first attempt was Ross Millington from Stockport Harriers, finishing in just 30 minutes and 20 seconds.
First woman across the finish line - the fourth time she has won the race - was Gemma Steel from Charnwood AC in 33 minutes 19 seconds.
But thousands took part in the annual race to raise money for charities, with Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and Weston Park Hospital among those to benefit from sponsorship.
The runners were set off on their way by Sheffield’s freesyle skier Katie Summerhayes, who took part in the Winter Olympics in Sochi earlier this year.
She was joined by Sheffield Lord Mayor Peter Rippon and Postman Pat.
Crowds of supporters lined the route, with bands and musicians also performing to help the runners around the course.
Coun Isobel Bowler, Cabinet member for Culture, Sport and Leisure at Sheffield Council, said: “I would like to encourage the runners to step up their training a notch after the race, with a view to taking part in Sheffield’s all-new half marathon next April.”
