VIDEO: Supertram bosses say tram was authorised to pass through red light at busy Sheffield junction

Supertram bosses in Sheffield have defended video footage of a tram passing through a red light to cross a busy Sheffield road.

Sheffield man Steve Carroll, aged 41, who shot the video, said the tram driver’s 'complete disregard for public safety and road traffic regulations is quite concerning'.

He added: “I was amazed that nobody was hurt.”

The tram appears to move off from the stop despite a red signal up ahead - which changes to green after the tram has already passed through.

Mr Carroll filmed the tram on the evening of October 18 at Manor Top tram stop, heading out of the city centre towards Halfway.

A Supertram spokeswoman said: “The Sheffield Council control room which manages traffic signals had a server problem which meant that this tram could not gain a signal at this particular junction.

“As is standard procedure in such circumstances, our control room liaised with the driver and the tram proceeded under caution to cross the junction safely and without incident.

She added: “So, while the footage may show a tram passing a red signal, the reality is that this manoeuvre was made in a controlled and safe way.”
