Video shows huge police presence at Sheffield city centre road smash

Police have spent all afternoon at the scene of a serious road traffic collision in Sheffield city centre.

Emergency vehicles have been at St Mary’s Gate since shortly before noon after a pedestrian was seriously injured in a road traffic accident.

The 46-year-old pedestrian has been taken to hospital with serious and ‘potentially life changing’ injuries.

Video from the scene, filmed by Mickelmas Youngus‎, shows a number of police vehicles closing off the road and police cordon tape sealing off the scene of the incident, which took place at about 11.40am.

The incident has caused major traffic jams throughout the area for much of the day and the clip shows long queues on the opposite carriageway.

Drivers are being urged to avoid the area while investigations continue.
