It is still a scoreline to send a shiver down the spine of the Hillsborough faithful - and one which few Wednesday fans will want to recall.

But the Owls' humiliation by United on September 19, 1999 has been named by the Daily Mail as the 27th best Premiership clash in history.

It was on that day that United, under the influence of new boss Bobby Robson, destroyed the Owls in a ruthless display at St James' Park.

Both sides were struggling, both on one point after seven matches - but it was Newcastle who cruised to a thumping victory, Alan Shearer scoring five times against the hapless Wednesday.

Aaron Hughes, Kieron Dyer and Gary Speed were also on target in what was the outright second biggest Premier League win of all-time.

And there's little respite in the rundown for Wednesday fans.

For the Owls' 3-3 draw with Arsenal in 2000 which condemned Peter Shreeves' side to relegation also featured in the top 30.

Wednesday’s Premier League fate was hanging by a thread heading into their daunting trip to Highbury where they had to win to keep their survival hopes alive going into the final day of the season.

But despite falling behind to a Lee Dixon strike, three goals in 12 minutes from Gerald Sibon, Gilles de Bilde and Alan Quinn put them on course for a sensational victory with 20 minutes to play.

But the dream was over as quickly as it flourished as Silvinho’s 78th minute reply was followed by a Thierry Henry effort a minute later to condemn Wednesday to relegation. The Owls haven’t been back to the top flight since.

The game was named the 30th best Premiership clash.
