Speaking to the press today, head coach Carlos Carvalhal said the striker, who has been out injured since coming off against Fulham in November, would undergo a scan and then be assessed in training tomorrow before a decision on his availability would be made.

Carvalhal said: "Gary Hooper will do a scan today, so if everything is okay and he trains tomorrow 100% maybe he can be involved. Let's see after the scan today."

While there are hopes that Hooper will return to the match which pits the Owls against one of their rivals for a play-off place, Tom Lees will definitely not make it, with Carvalhal not knowing just how long his central defender, who hasn't played since the 2-2 draw with Bristol City at the end of January, will be out for.

"I am not a doctor, I know he has a muscle problem," Carvalhal said of Lees. "I must trust in my medical department, he is still with the medical department. He is not available to play Saturday but I am waiting for him. When he comes back to training and he can be available he can be involved but he is not with us."

Meanwhile, Carvalhal has revealed the reasons why long-term injury victim Marco Matias has been sidelined for all of this campaign so far.

The Portuguese forward, who won goal of the season last year for his incredible strike against Leeds United, has undertaken two operations and then a programme to help balance the strength in his muscles which weakened as a result of the injury.

"Matias has had two operations, the first one he had a lot of problems with so he must have a second one," said Carvalhal. "The second one when he recovered he's still with a lot of pain. After, with a new exam, he needed to do a 'balance' with the abductors and abdominal, a special programme to balance the power of the muscles. These sorts of things take time because it was very serious.

"It is a minimum eight weeks to do this programme which is a long, long time. It will be in the programme for two more weeks. After this he will try to get back to the normal training."

He added: "He will finish the eight weeks (programme), in two weeks, he will be balanced and able to train. You never know if there will be complications. You remember when we talked before I said he was near to coming back because I saw him start running but he felt a lot of pain.

"We believed that if everything is okay after the 15th this month he will start training with the team, if everything is ok."
