VIDEO: Sheffield Wednesday fans accused of racist chanting on train

Video has emerged of Sheffield Wednesday fans apparently involved in racist chanting on a train.

Reports of the offensive chanting were made on Saturday, March 5, with British Transport Police believing that Owls supporters travelling from Sheffield to Lincoln were to blame.

A witness who was on the same carriage today said the incident involved a group of around 10 people who were singing football songs for about 20 minutes, before performing racist chants on two separate occasions.

The men are seen on the video using a derogatory term about Pakistanis while making references to Sheffield United.

Matt Scrafton said another passenger had challenged the group about the racist chants but ‘they basically just ignored him’ before getting off at Retford.

He said the group were also chanting about the IRA, while one of them said he hoped Rotherham manager Neil Warnock, who has previously managed Sheffield United, got cancer.

Police have today released an image of one man they say holds ‘vital information’ about the incident.

PC Dermott Carlin said: “A group of around five football fans, believed to be Sheffield Wednesday supporters, were travelling on the 7.49pm Northern Rail service from Sheffield to Lincoln and chanting racist songs to the obvious distress of fellow passengers.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who might have witnessed this anti-social and racist display.

“Loutish and racist behaviour like this has no place on the rail network and will not be tolerated.”

A photograph of a man believed to hold vital information about the incident has been released by British Transport Police.
