Blackman, the on-loan Chelsea youngster, saw red after an altercation with Brentford’s Ryan Woods, who was also sent off just moments after Chris Mepham had cancelled out Chris Basham’s opener for the Blades.

Blackman will now serve a three-match ban, starting with tonight’s visit of automatic promotion chasing Cardiff City, and he posted on Instagram: “Have to live and learn from the choices you make. Don’t always get it right.”

Chris Wilder, who praised Woods as one of the outstanding midfield players in the Championship, added: "I'm not really sure what he was thinking about dealing with a 6ft 7in lad. Jamal doesn't have to hand the ball back. Woods has a slap and Jamal retaliated and made it easy for the ref.

"It's frustrating for both benches because the ref missed quite a lot for both sides during the game but not that incident, and we both lose good players for three games. For me, not every tackle is a yellow card in the conditions."
