The 26-year-old, who joined the Championship club from Brentford in 2013, is expected to make his debut against Millwall tomorrow after agreeing a long-term contract at Bramall Lane.

Despite convincing fellow goalkeeper George Long to accept a revised deal less than three months ago, United manager Chris Wilder said: “There has to be competition for places. I’m here to make tough, strong decisions and to make us better as a group. Simon, we think, does that.”

Moore has made just one appearance for City this season but, after training with his new team mates for the first time yesterday, is poised to feature when United visit The Den.

“He’s only been kept out of a Championship side by an international goalkeeper (David Marshall),” Wilder continued. “I’ve worked closely with Wardy (goalkeeping coach Darren Ward) on this because I trust his judgement. We’ve done due diligence on Simon, on his performances and his character. He was outstanding for Brentford and he’s at a good age. It’s a good bit of business, I think, from our point of view.”

Although United and City have refused to elaborate on the size of Moore’s transfer fee, The Star understands it consists of a £250,000 downpayment with a further £240,000, dependent upon certain performance-related targets, possibly owed. He is contracted to United until 2019.

“Speaking to Simon,” Wilder said. “He’s played in pressure games and he’s played for Cardiff so he understands the pressures of representing a big club. He also made it clear he wanted to come and join us.”
