Last year, he notched only seven goals in 51 League games for EC Kassel Huskies in the German second flight and believes he can improve on that.

Hopefully, that will start at Nottingham Panthers in Saturday's season-opener.

Asked if he was hoping for a higher return in his attacking contribution than in Kassel, the 28-year-old Canadian replied: "Yes, for sure. Last year I struggled, obviously, offensively, getting ice but hopefully here I can help provide offence and be responsible defensively."

Della Rovere attributed his goal problems to "something the coach decided to do...but I don't want to get into that right now.

"You have years like that and I am looking to bounce back here."

The former Braehead Clan winger was the final player signed by Steelers coach Paul Thompson in the Summer.

"I had options, I had something going on with the DEL 2 from last year so I had to wait on my contract. But I know a few faces here and it was a no-brainer for me to sign here.

"Sheffield was the first team to talk to me and I jumped right on it when I saw the roster that he had.

"I was confident in this team. Sixteen new players coming in...I thought we were going to have a good team this year."

Della Rovere has a colourful playing history, which includes seven games in the NHL, with St. Louis Blues.

"My first game was against Washington, that was the team that drafted me and I got traded to St Louis, it was a neat experience. Something I will never forget" he said.

The player said there had been a "learning experience" playing in the four Sheffield pre-season games against strong Swedish opposition adding: "Coming into Nottingham, I think we will be well prepared."
