The incident, which is not being treated as a hate crime, happened at about 9pm on June 15 at the Al-Huda Islamic Centre on Bawtry Road, Brinsworth, near Tinsley.

A member of the centre filmed a video of the damage, which has been sent to The Star. He said: "They have completely trashed this place. They have smashed the place up and they have legged it. Look at this on the floor! They have thrown everything about.

People come here and use this place as a place of worship.”

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: "Police received a call at about 8.40pm from the building’s caretaker reporting a possible burglary.

"We arrived and looked around the premises, nothing had been taken but it does suggest from our log that the building is in a poor state.

"No offences were found to have taken place."
