VIDEO: Sheffield homeless charity unveils flats for vulnerable young people

A homeless charity in Sheffield has finished renovating five flats which provide a safe place for vulnerable young people to develop independence.

‘No. 11’ on St Barnabas Road was declared open on Monday and consists of five self-contained flats with eight bedrooms.

The building is next door to Roundabout charity’s main hostel which provides emergency and medium-stay accommodation for homeless people aged 16 to 21.

Roundabout offers shelter, support and life skills to more than 150 young people in South Yorkshire every day.

No. 11 tenants hope to eventually progress to moving into a place of their own independent of the charity.

The tenants have the same key work and support provision as they had in the hostel, but they will have started or are working towards some form of education, training or employment.

Trainee Key Worker at Roundabout, 24-year-old Sally Frost, said the new flats mean ‘everything’ to the young people.

She added: “It’s a confidence boost. If they can move to No. 11 it just shows how far they’ve come from when they first arrived here.”

The charity said the flats should help young people to ‘break the cycle’ of re-experiencing homelessness when they leave the hostel.
