VIDEO: Rush-hour road closures in Sheffield city centre due to huge cycle race today

The Sheffield Grand Prix will see closures in place on a circuit that takes in Arundel Gate, Furnival Gate, Pinstone Street and Norfolk Street.

Hundreds of people are expected to line the streets to watch the event which is part of the British Cycling Circuit series that sees some of the best British riders compete in 14 events in towns and cities across the country.

Elite riders from top teams such as Team Wiggins and JLT Condor will be taking part. Barnsley-born triple Olympic gold medalist Ed Clancy OBE is expected on the start line.

The evenings cycling will include the 3/4 support race from 7pm before the elite men's race begins at 8.15pm.

There will also be food and drink stalls for spectators around the Peace Gardens.

Tudor Square will be closed from noon.

Pinstone Street to the junction of Furnival Gate and Norfolk Street, Surrey Street (from junction of Norfolk Street towards Pinstone Street) and Leopold Street (access to taxis only) are closed from 4.30pm.

Pinstone Street (from Furnival Gate to Cross Burgess Street), Furnival Gate to junction of Arundel Gate and Arundel Gate (toward Norfolk Street), is off limits from 5.45pm.

All roads will reopen from 10.30pm.

Jonny Clay, director of cycling at event organisers British Cycling, said: “The competition will no doubt be as fierce as ever, and I’m sure that all of the teams, riders and spectators are chomping at the bit to get started.”

The events reached a combined audience of over 50 million people in 2017, through coverage of the racing on Eurosport and other media outlets.

The event will move onto Barnsley town centre on Friday, July 20, before concluding with the Colne GP on July 25.
