Thermometers are expected to drop to -2 degrees overnight, with the weather getting colder throughout the week, dropping to as low as -5 on Wednesday and Thursday.

The flakes started to fall in Sheffield city centre at around 9am today, with outlying areas of higher ground worst affected.

Motorists have been issued with advice by both the South Yorkshire and the and Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnerships.

Chairman Mike Ashworth, of the Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership, said: “If you do decide to travel, make sure you’re prepared. It’s a good idea to take an emergency kit of boots, warm clothes, a shovel, a torch, a snack, a hot drink and a charged mobile telephone.

“Only travel if your journey is really necessary. Could you use public transport instead?

“In icy conditions slow down, steer gently and avoid harsh braking. It can take up to ten times longer to stop in icy conditions compared to being on a dry road

“Slow down and use dipped headlights if you’re driving while it’s snowing.

“In ice, snow or slush use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin. To prevent locking your wheels when braking, get into a low gear earlier than normal. Allow your speed to fall and use the brake pedal gently. If you do skid, ease off the accelerator but do not brake suddenly.”
