Captain Glenn Loovens admits it 'would mean the world' to help Sheffield Wednesday secure promotion to the Premier League.

With five matches remaining of their Championship campaign, Carlos Carvalhal’s charges look well-placed to clinch a top-six finish.

Despite Saturday’s heavy loss away to Bristol City, the Owls occupy the final play-off position and are five points clear of closest rivals Cardiff City.

Loovens, who has resumed first-team training following an ankle problem, has told The Star: “It would mean the world to me to help the club get promoted. This is a big club. We have got some great fans who deserve the best. This club should be playing at the highest level and hopefully we can realise that for all of them.

“There is still a long way to go but it is good to have dreams. We are so close so let’s go all the way.”

After seeing the Robins halt their four-match winning sequence, Wednesday will be seeking an instant response when they host Ipswich Town tomorrow.

“We have got five big finals coming up,” said the Dutch centre-back. “We have to make sure that we make the play-offs.

“We have been in the top six for most of the season. We would be very sad to not be there at the end.

“Every time this season where we have let ourselves down we have bounced back so I expect another tough game (against Ipswich) but I’m sure we will bounce back.”

Along with Owls teammate Fernando Forestieri, Loovens took part in the ‘Time for Tea Cake Off’ competition at Marco’s New York Italian restaurant in Sheffield yesterday.

The duo competed against Sheffield United’s Che Adams and Harrison McGahey, Rotherham United’s Luciano Becchio and Aimen Belaid and Barnsley’s Nick Townsend and Callum Evans for the South Yorkshire bragging rights and raise funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s tea party campaign Time for Tea.

The event saw each team take part in a timed cake-off competition, decorating their cakes under the guidance of a professional chef.

Each club has set up their own JustGiving page to encourage fans to vote and donate to the cancer charity.

Loovens added: “I really enjoyed the day. It was good fun and for a great cause.”
