City councillors in the Crosspool area have called on Sheffield Council to change the limit on the A57 Manchester Road from 40mph to 30mph. They have set up a petition in response to concerns from people living in the area about the speed of Crosspool traffic through residential areas.

Councillors Anne Murphy and Geoff Smith are behind the campaign, backed by Rosemary Telfer and Craig Gamble Smith, who will stand with Coun Murphy as Labour’s candidates in the Crookes and Crosspool ward at the May council elections.

“Safety has to be put first and our petition will give residents the chance to show their concern,” they said in a joint statement.

“This is a busy road used by cars and trucks heading to and from the Snake Pass but for much of it through Crosspool the limit is 40mph.”

The group say their aim is to highlight the case for action after being approached by residents.

“We support this because it is a residential area,” they said. “We believe it would be safer for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and passengers and that it would have no discernible impact on the overall time of car journeys through Crosspool and into the city,” they add.

The campaigners said they appreciated the financial pressure the council was under, but Crosspool residents had a case that should be heard.

“We feel the city council should accept in principle a reduction in the speed limit and ensure that it is considered seriously for early implementation.”
