Over 20,000 were in attendance at Bramall Lane, after a week in which negativity hovered following the inability to add to the squad on transfer deadline day, but the disappointment grew following a poor display which led to a potentially demoralising loss.

United were booed-off the pitch following the final whistle but Adkins, who had called for supporters to show solidarity with his players beforehand, said: “I want to thank the fans, because I asked them to stick behind the players throughout the game and they have done.

“Like myself, everyone was frustrated at the end of the game, and that’s the time when you can vent your frustrations. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
