Video: Minute's applause in memory of Sheffield Wednesday fan Daz Haigh

Followers of both Wednesday and Brentford, their opponents at Saturday’s home game, observed the applause on the 28th minute in memory of Owls fan Darren Haigh, who died aged 28 last month.

Known as Daz, he was a season ticket holder at Hillsborough, travelling from his home in Haverhill, Suffolk.

Wednesday, already winning 1-0, scored almost the second the applause ended through a shot by Gary Hooper. They went on to win 4-0.

Darren was a member of the East Midlands Owls group, who made sure he was remembered by hanging a huge flag with his name and portrait on the Kop.

Darren suffered from a form of cancer called sarcoma. He had previously beaten it twice, only for it to come back a third time. He would have been 29 this coming Saturday. He leaves partner Kayleigh Davis and daughter Elsie-Mai, aged five.

Pal Iain Robertson, part of the East Midlands Owls group, said: “Darren was one of the nicest lads you could ever meet, always had time for everyone and despite the treatment and pain he was suffering, he always had his cheeky grin on his face and looked on the bright side of life. Darren will be missed by everyone, but never forgotten. We’ll make sure of that.”

A crowdfunding campaign in Darren’s memory has a target of £5,000. The aim was to pay for his funeral, to keep his memory alive with the flag and other tributes, and to support Kayleigh and Elsie-Mai. So far £4,480 has been raised. Visit crowdfunding.justgiving.com/eastmidlands-owls.
