VIDEO: Man shot on one of Sheffield's busiest roads in '˜targeted attack'

Police are hunting a gunman after a man in his 20s was shot in a '˜targeted attack' on a major Sheffield road.

The incident happened around 2pm yesterday on Penistone Road, Hillsborough, with the victim shot in the leg.

An area of the road has been closed as police hunt the gunman.

Police said the incident is believed to be a ‘targeted attack on a particular individual’ and that there is not thought to be a wider danger to the public.

The victim was taken to hospital and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said this afternoon: “An area of Penistone Road, close to the junction with Herries Road, remains closed while the investigation continues. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact police via 101 and quoting incident number 479 of January 20.”

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Whittaker added: “We believe this incident to be a targeted attack on a particular individual, but we appreciate that incidents of this nature have a real impact on the local community.

“I would like to reassure residents that we believe there is not a wider danger to the public following this incident, and we will be providing an increased police presence in the area to provide reassurance and support to residents.

“I would also ask that anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw anything suspicious at around 2pm to get in touch.

Police said that Halifax Road, close to the junction with Herries Road, had been shut.

The incident resulted in delays in both directions on Penistone Road North between the Clay Wheels Lane junction and the A6102 Herries Road junction.
