Carlos Carvalhal’s charges will face Brighton and Hove Albion in the semi-finals of the end-of-season lottery after the Seagulls were pipped to the second automatic promotion berth by Middlesbrough.

The Owls, who ended their regular campaign with a 2-1 defeat at mid-table Wolverhampton Wanderers, take on Brighton at Hillsborough in the first leg on Friday before the return at the Amex Stadium on May 16.

Semedo, who broke down in tears after full-time at Molineux, said: “It would be great to see the club get back in the Premier League.

“Even if I retired after that, I will be the happiest guy in the world. To take this club from League One to the Premier League would be something special. Hopefully we can do that. We will need the fans support more than ever on Friday and Monday.”

Semedo, one of 10 changes made by Carvalhal against Wolves, believes Wednesday’s fans can give them the edge.

“They have been tremendous even in the bad periods we’ve had in the past,” he said. “I will ask them to make extra effort (in the Play-Offs) because without them it will be impossible to do it.

“We really need them.”

Wednesday have played out goalless draws on the occasions the two clubs have previously met this term.

“Brighton will be a strong opponent, like all of the teams in the play-offs, but each of the four teams has a 25 per cent chance,” said Carvalhal.

“We have drawn against them both times this season in balanced games and we understand we are playing a top team but I think we are a better team now than in the past.

“We have a positive environment. We will be underdogs but that can be a positive for us.”
