Tom Lees also got on the score sheet stabbing him from a Joey Pelupessy free kick.

Speaking after the 3-1 win at Sunderland, Luhukay reiterated his desire for Nuhiu to stay at the club. His contract is up at the end of the season.

"I'm proud of my team - in the last games we make good progress. We're working hard for the team, for each other," Luhukay said.

"Today it was also not an easy game - I think there was 90 minutes of hard work to come to this success.

"We are in a good shape at the moment for strikers who need not a lot of chances in the last games. We don't have a lot of chances today but we were in the second half very effective.

"It was important, the goals from Lucas (Joao), Tom (Lees) and also of course from Atdhe (Nuhiu) - a good shape and good confidence the strikers have trust in each other and they made the difference so we can be successful."

Speaking about Nuhiu and Joao Luhukay added: "(He was) fantastic but also the ball with his head laid back to Lucas (Joao) who can score so they're both very important.

"The team was very focused and very concentrated for us to come to a good result.

"I'm now three months here but everyone has seen progression from Atdhe and Lucas - they work for the team and they're also winning balls back.

"When I see in the second half Atdhe with the defending to clear situations and Lucas also for the team he goes out and goes 30, 40 metres in the sprint to clear in our own 16.

"That is the character from the team but also from the players."
