It was claimed that the woman got hold of the Doncaster singer's mobile phone number and launched into her tirade after he refused to follow her on Twitter.

In the clip, uploaded to YouTube, a female voice says: "You f***ing b****. I hope your baby dies."

There is a pause before a voice, sounding remarkably similar to Tomlinson, replies: "Hello? Did you really just say that?

As she confirms she did, "Tomlinson" replies: "Cos luckily for you, I've got you on record and I've got you on record saying that and that's going straight to my lawyer and we'll find out who it is. Well done, well done."

As details of the story emerged, he later posted on Facebook: "Getting my number from somewhere and phoning me up telling me you hope my child dies because I won't follow you on Twitter is f****** messed up. See you in court."

Last Thursday, he tweeted: "The privacy laws are f***** up," signed off with an angry face emoticon.

Other audio clips of the exchange have also been shared online.

During the first snippet, the voice purporting to be Louis sounds confused as the fan asks him: "Hey is this Louis?... Can you follow me on Twitter?"

After a brief silence, "Louis" asks: "Who is this and why've you got my number?"

In a second audio clip, an extremely angry "Louis" allegedly tells the fan who called: "I hope you're s****** yourself because you should be terrified. Thank you."

Fans rushed to support him in the wake of the revelations with the hashtag #RespectLouis trending on Twitter among upset One Direction lovers.

Tomlinson welcomed his son, Freddie Reign, into the world on January 21. The baby's mother, 23-year-old American stylist, Briana Jungwirth, who is based in Los Angeles and who Tomlinson is no longer with, has reportedly spoken of the abuse she faces from One Direction fans on a daily basis.
