Speaking publicly for the first time since being confirmed as the new United manager, Wilder appreciates that his knowledge of the club and its history and tradition is important, but a grounding in management at Alfreton, Halifax, Oxford United and Northampton Town is the reason why he has been given the post following Nigel Adkins' sacking.

"Regarding my appointment, I hope and I believe 100% that it's because I am a good manager that's ready for the job and it's my time to do the job and I can move and I can make a difference here," he said.

"My history gives me an insight and a feeling of what the club and most importantly the supporters are after because I have been there on both sides of the fence.

"I was involved in a relegation here, I've had tough times as well but on the other side of it I have been involved in arguably the greatest day in the club's history and witnessing unbelievable days down here, wtaching Neil's teams, Danny's teams, Nigel's teams do well and that is the biggest thing I want, for people to recognise I am on the up."
