Carlos Carvalhal was, once again, left to rue missed opportunities as Sheffield Wednesday lost 2-1 at Reading.

The Owls head coach used what he said was an old Portuguese phrase in describing the game, stating 'If you don't kill, you die,' indicating that Wednesday's profligacy in front of goal cost them dearly.

The worst offender was Lucas Joao who missed a gilt-edged opportunity at 0-0 before Roy Beerens scored twice, the first via a heavy deflection,

Steven Fletcher came off the bench and pulled one back with a header to set up a dramatic finish, but Wednesday couldn't snatch an equaliser.

"There is one sentence I can use for this game 'if you don't kill, you die'," said Carvalhal.

"We prepared very well, we know Reading like to be with the ball, but we closed well our spaces. I don't remember any defending in the first half, from anyone, because we blocked their dynamic.

"We have another part of the game, when we have the ball we tried to be a threat and score. In the first half we had a two or three situations to score but we didn't achieve the goal.

"In the second half it was the same. We had a clear chance, probably the most clear chance of the game, the situation with Lucas (Joao).

"In one moment they had a clear situation on goal, it is a shot on goal from one player from a free kick that didn't exist in my opinion because Sam did a clear tackle.

"They achieve one goal and after the second, in a strange situation also, my players never gave up, we were still believing, we had chances and scored 2-1 and controlled the counter attack.

"We had Fletcher with a chance in the last minute and we felt we must win this. We had more threat, they had more of the ball but we had more of a threat."
