VIDEO: Gang attempt to steal ATM from Doncaster shop 'using 4x4'

A gang of masked thugs tried to ram-raid the front of a shop with a 4X4 in a failed attempt to steal a cash point in Doncaster this morning.

Police were called to Heron Foods on Norman Crescent, Rossington, just before 1am yesterday when a Land Rover reversed into the shop.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “A cash machine inside the premises is thought to have been the target of the burglary but this was not taken and the suspects are thought to have left the scene empty-handed.

“Officers believe four male suspects, who were all wearing balaclavas, were involved in the burglary.

“A burnt-out Land Rover vehicle, thought to have been used in the burglary, was recovered by police on Sheep Wash Lane, Tickhill yesterday morning.

“No arrests have been made and police are asking for any witnesses, who have seen the suspect vehicle or any of the occupants, to contact police.”

The front of the shop has been left with extensive damage caused by the Land Rover – which had a long wheelbase and a lighter coloured roof – and a police cordon was in place for several hours.

An eyewitness said they were suprised to see an incident of that nature take place in Rossington.

They added: “They smashed the glass front doors with the car.

“They got the cashpoint as far as the front door, but they realised the box didn’t have anything in it.

“People had started to come to the front doors to see what was going on after they’d heard all the banging from when they broke the front doors.

“So I think they must have decided it wasn’t worth it and drove off.

“The police arrived about 10 minutes after they started trying to steal it.

“It was quite shocking to see, you hear about these things happening in Doncaster but you don’t expect them to happen near to you.”

This latest attempted burglary comes after some 10 cashpoints were stolen in what police believed were connected incidents carried out across Doncaster and the surrounding areas

between December 2014 and March 2015, using stolen diggers.

The police spokesman said detectives could not confirm whether yesterday’s incident was connected to the previous ram raids in the region at this stage.
