A 22-year-old man was shot as he walked through Meersbrook Park at about 6.25pm yesterday.

Armed police have been conducting detailed searches of the area but the suspect has still not been caught.

A number of park users expressed their concern today that the attacker is still at large.

Lindsay Moore, a mum who lives close to the park and witnessed armed police responding to the shooting, said: "There were school kids walking up and down the road where armed police were this morning.

"It is very worrying to think they are still out there. It would be good if police issued a description of the person they are after.

"I mean are we supposed to be looking out for someone? It would be nice to know."

Other residents expressed their shock over the incident describing the area as usually 'nice and quiet'.

Two dog walkers, who only wanted to give their first names as Rachel and Peter, of Woodseats, hope the shooting is a one off.

Rachel, aged 30, said: "It's awful. I hope it is an isolated incident. I think extra police patrols at this stage is going a bit too far but they should keep an eye on it.

"If there are other incidents then they should do more patrols."

Peter, aged 36, added: "This is the first I have heard of it. You look around the park and would never have thought it would happen here."

The victim is in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

In a post on Facebook, his mum said her son was walking to the Cross Scythes pub when the gunman approached and asked for cigarettes and cash.

She said the attacker then 'held the gun to his head', her son turned and the bullet went 'through his neck' and is currently 'stuck in his jaw'.

She is now offering a £500 reward for information on the attacker.

Police have not yet given a description of the shooter and no arrests have been made.
