However, the Blades boss said he felt that frustration was in the nature of supporters at Bramall Lane and claimed that he experienced it before as an opposition manager.

Players and management took part in a 'lap of appreciation' after a game which was dogged by boos, jeers and ironic cheers from the home support as United went down 2-0 to the Iron.

Not many stayed behind, though, with the annoyance at another season in League One lying ahead, giving way to apathy in the stands.

Adkins said afterwards, when asked about the atmosphere during and after the game: "I've come with, today's opposition for example, Scunthorpe United, as a visiting manager and you know what the atmosphere is going to be like here at Sheffield United. Always has been, probably always will be...that's just the nature of it.

"You've just got to get on with it. There's a lot of frustration for us, it's five or six years now that we've been in League One. We've got to get out of it as soon as we can and until we do there's going to be a lot of people unhappy, none more so than me."
