Terry Bradbury, 74, and his wife Ann Bradbury, 73, became overnight millionaires last weekend after matching all six numbers.

The couple, who play Lotto every week, said they normally pick the same numbers, but decided to change to a Lucky Dip for Saturday’s draw.

Ex-midfielder Terry said: “We felt like a change so threw two lucky dip lines on – and we are so glad that we did.”

He added: “The news is still sinking in. We still can’t quite believe it.”

Ann said that looking after their four sons and nine grandchildren is the most important thing for the couple following the win.

She said: “The biggest joy will be helping our sons and family. Their lives will be changed, and they will be

secure.”

“It is wonderful to think that none of our children will have a mortgage or any stress for the rest of their lives,”Ann added.

“This win provides our family with security and this is what pleases Terry and myself more than anything.”

Terry said he did not know what he was going to spend the cash on first.

“It’s all surreal. It’s like being in a film. It’s a fantasy world,” he said.

Terry began his football career with Chelsea in 1957 and made 29 appearances for the First Division club.

He moved to Southend United in 1962 for a reported £6,000 before going on to play for Leyton Orient.

Terry moved to Wrexham in 1967 before joining rivals Chester, and later worked as a player-coach at Weymouth.

After retiring from football, Terry moved to Tideswell and bought the First Drop Inn public house, which has since closed. The couple ran the pub for 13 years, before retiring in 2000 and settling in Buxton.

When asked about the moment they realised the win, Ann said the couple had been enjoying a cup of tea at home and spotted their numbers – 13, 14, 35, 39, 46 and 49 – on teletext.

After celebrating with a second cup, Ann said the first thing her husband did was to take their son’s dog, Alfie, out for a walk.

Ann, who said they were too shocked to jump up and down when they realised, added: “I instantly knew we had won, but still could not believe it,”

At a press conference at The Rising Sun pub, in Bamford, on Wednesday, Ann said that the cash will not change their lives too much.

Ann said: “We are too down to earth for all that.”

Terry said he had no plans to emulate modern footballers with their flash cars and other luxuries either.

But the couple will be allowing themselves a few treats.

Ann said they will be spending some of their winnings on a villa in Spain – their favourite holiday destination – and where they lived for six years.

Terry said: “I had a good time at Chelsea, enjoyed every minute – all through my playing career. This is just the icing on the cake for Ann and I.”

He added that one of his most cherished memories was walking out at Wembley in front of 90,000 people as a 15-year-old schoolboy.
