Engineers have returned to the site of a major gas leak - which yesterday forced the evacuation of residents - to complete road resurfacing works.

A company spokesman said: "The gas main had been damaged earlier in the day by third party contractors carrying out work in the road.

"Gas supplies to the area have been maintained throughout the incident.

"We would like to thank local residents for their patience and cooperation during this incident."
