Doncaster’s Afghanistan war hero Ben Parkinson was given a spontaneous round of applause as he led the tributes at the town’s annual Remembrance Sunday service.

Thousands of members of the public and civic dignitaries clapped as Ben was pushed in his wheelchair to place a wreath of poppies at the foot of the war memorial in Bennetthorpe.

the town fell silent on the stroke of 11am as the traditional two minute silence to remembere the nation’s war dead was impeccably observed.

A lone bugler sounded The Last Post and The Rev Bob Fitzharris led a short service and prayers before Mayor Ros Jones, Doncaster Central MP and other civic leaders laid wreaths at this year’s service, which this year celebrated the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.
