VIDEO: 'A disgrace' - Preston North End boss Simon Grayson slams red-card pair Eoin Doyle and Jermaine Beckford after scrap against Sheffield Wednesday

The Preston forwards became involved in an altercation in the dying minutes of their side's 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough and after both raising their hands, were red-carded by referee Scott Duncan.

Doyle and Beckford exchanged words after the former had played in Marnick Vermijl, whose shot blazed wide of the target and following a disagreement, both had to be separated as tempers flared.

Referee Duncan had already sent off Wednesday goalscorer Fernando Forestieri after he had clashed with Ben Pearson.

"In 30 years a player and manager I have never seen an incident like that between two team-mates," said Grayson. "I thought I had seen everything at the game I went to on Friday night, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle, where there were two missed penalties and two sendings-off. But today was an embarrassment, those two players were embarrassing.

"It came from an incident when we broke and there was a disagreement between the two of them about whether it was the right pass to play Marnick Vermijl in. Then it was absolutely childish behaviour from the pair of them and that has cost us potentially a point from the game, even three points.

"At 2-1, 11 v 10 it looked like we were going to get something out of the game. Those two should be embarrassed, they have let down their team-mates and the fans."

Wednesday won the game when substitute Steven Fletcher scored from the spot to double the lead after Will Buckley had been hauled down by goalkeeper Chris Maxwell.

Doyle pulled one back but that moment of madness at the end cost the Lilywhites.
