Rovers suffered their second successive 1-0 defeat on Tuesday night as they were beaten by Blackburn Rovers, who won promotion to the Championship as a result.

Ferguson is keen for Rovers to end the season on a positive note with a pair of wins from their remaining three games.

“We’ve got to make sure we get at least some points and we’re targeting six from the last three if we can,” Ferguson said.

“We’ve got to make sure we try to get to 60 points if we can.

“We need two wins out of three games. That was the target.

“We’ve missed a real chance in the last two games previous to this. They were real opportunities to keep ploughing through the league but we came unstuck in those two games.

“We knew against Blackburn and then the Wigan game were going to be difficult so we’ve got to get some points.”

Rovers are yet to mathematically secure survival but they six points and 18 goals better off than Oldham Athletic, who occupy the final relegation place and host Ferguson’s side on Saturday.

He said: “We’ve tried to maintain the fact we want to look upwards.

“But until you’re mathematically safe you’ve got to make sure you finish the job off.

“The last three games to pick up only one point is disappointing because we were on a right good run.”
