VIDEO: Crowds pack city centre for Sheffield Grand Prix bike race

Large crowds gathered to cheer on elite cyclists competing in the fifth Sheffield Grand Prix.

The Sheffield Hallam University Grand Prix, part of the British Cycling Elite Circuit Race Series, returned to the city last night.

Hundreds of world-class cyclists competed in the race around Sheffield city centre.

Riders in set off from outside the Town Hall and cycled down Pinstone Street, on to Furnival Gate and down to the roundabout before sweeping left on Arundel Gate past Hallam University’s Owen Building.

Cyclists then hooked a left at the Crucible Theatre and made their way up Norfolk Street.

From there they rode on the Cocker & Carr cobbled section, turning right on to Surrey Street before finishing on Pinstone Street.

John Shillito, 56, who cycled in Sheffield’s Sky Ride, said: “My wife and I have come down to this race every year – we love it.

“We need to get more people off cars and onto cycling and events like this help. Plus, it’s always a memorable evening.”

Wife Andrea, 49, added: “These riders are at the top of their game and it’s a pleasure to watch them.”

Sandy Savory, 74, of Parson Cross, said: “I’m a keen cyclist, even at this age, and have been out for a ride today. I come to this event every year and it’s always a lot of fun.”
