Video: The best is yet to come from Sheffield Wednesday star

Striker Jordan Rhodes has been backed to carry on scoring after firing the Owls to within touching distance of the Championship play-off positions.

Record-signing Rhodes proved to be Wednesday’s matchwinner in Tuesday’s scrappy victory over Millwall.

The £8m forward marked his first league start in over two months in style, heading in Jacob Butterfield’s corner to end his barren run in front of goal. It was only the third time Rhodes has managed to get on the scoresheet this season and was the 27-year-old’s first Championship goal since March.

Liam Palmer told The Star: “You could see everyone was delighted for Jordan when he scored.

“If he gets a chance, he will score. It’s just that confidence side to it.

“Once Jordan got off the mark, you could see that it raised his game.

“Hopefully there’s more to come from him now.”

Victory nudged the Owls, who have qualified for the play-offs in each of the last two campaigns, up to 14th.

“It was an important three points (against Millwall),” said Palmer, a graduate of the club’s youth system. “We had to really grind it out.

“The boys at the back handled Millwall well. They were direct. We stayed together as a unit.

“The fans got behind us. I think they felt we were playing quite well at the time when Millwall levelled.

“We stuck together and were delighted we held on for the win.

“Hopefully, even though it was a scrappy win, it can give us that momentum.”

Rhodes and Palmer were among five changes Wednesday chief Carlos Carvalhal made to his starting eleven in midweek.

Palmer, who replaced Jack Hunt at right-back, said: “It was great to be back. It was my first start in the last 11 games.

“I wanted to give as much to the team as I possibly could.

“There’s competition in each position and it’s been like that for a while now. We try and push each other as a team.”
