Billy Sharp scored the only goal of the game to lift United into seventh in the League One table capping off what has been a rollercoaster seven days for the club.

After last Saturday's derby success over Doncaster Rovers, United lost away to Bury on Tuesday then on Friday it was revealed that midfielder Jose Baxter had been suspended again after testing positive for a banned substance.

The 1-0 victory lifted the gloom that had been hovering around S2 and Adkins thanked supporters for playing their part in bringing a positive atmosphere to the Lane.

"We all share the same common cause," he said. "We all want Sheffield United to do well.

"Today I think it was demonstrated. The players worked very hard which is the minimum requirement. We endevoured to play some good football, created chances and likewise the supporters have got right behind the players, so it was a two-way thing.

"At times when things aren't going quite your way that's when everyone has got to come together."
