United slipped to 12th in League One, but remain six points off the top six with nine games remaining.

Chris Taylor, on loan from Blackburn, put the Lions in front with an early goal and although the Blades saw a lot of the ball, particularly in the second half, they couldn't find a breakthrough and suffered their 13th defeat of the season.

Boss Adkins said that his side's inability to get on the end of crosses proved to be their undoing, with a Billy Sharp header their only real chance of a breakthrough.

"We went one behind and that was the catalyst really," Adkins told BBC Radio Sheffield. "We had good spells, we got crosses in, the keeper made a really good save from Billy Sharp. We huffed and puffed a bit, put some really good corners in, in good areas, but nobody really threatened and got on the end of it, which we could have done.

"You could turn round and say we probably dominated the second half. Their game management in respect of running the clock down was very good. As soon as we got a bit of momentum the game was stopped; someone either got injured or there was a delaying tactic of some description. So well done to them on that because that's what the game is all about at times.

"It's just frustrating that we've come away from home believing that we could get three points and we've come away with nothing."

Adkins added: "They sat very deep in their numbers - they've got a goal to defend and we've got to go and break them down. Although we built the play and got the ball in good areas we haven't had that quality today that we needed to go and score the important goals to get something from the game."
