Vandals wreck dugouts at Rotherham non-league football ground

A non-league football club has launched an appeal to help pay for new dugouts after vandals went on a wrecking spree at their ground.

Dedicated volunteers at Maltby Main Football Club were left to foot the after a gang of youths damaged their Muglet Lane base last weekend.

Wilf Race, club chairman, said the dugouts had been "temporarily repaired" until the end of the season but asked for help from businesses to build brick or breeze block dugouts in the summer.

he said: "We actually rent our ground and pay £125 a week to play there and then when stuff like this happens we have to pay for the repairs on top of our rent.

"A group of youths got onto the ground and basically kicked the living daylights out of the dugouts.

"They're only made of perspex so they all just broke."

Mr Race said the incident happened on Sunday, January 7 but committed volunteers clubbed together to repair them in time for Main's game against Worksop Town the following Saturday, which attracted a Northern Counties East Football League Premier Division record crowd of 311.

"We will just make do with the temporary repairs until the summer but we'd like to hear from anyone out there who can help pay for something more permanent," he said.

"Any contribution towards the costs would be very welcome."

Mr Race said the club were currently "enjoying their most successful season ever" and sit fourth in the NCEFL Premier Division.
