A van driver involved in a head-on collision on the Stocksbridge Bypass is in a serious condition in hospital today.

The 37-year-old was involved in a collision with a lorry on the A616 at Langsett at 5.30am yesterday.

The collision led to the closure of the road for a number of hours while emergency services treated the casualty, carried out investigations at the scene and arranged for recovery of the vehicles involved.

South Yorkshire Police said the van driver, who was in a white Citroen Relay, was travelling away from Flouch towards Sheffield.

The blue HGV involved was travelling in the opposite direction

A police spokeswoman said: "The two vehicles were in collision close to Uskers Barn and the bypass was closed in both directions until around midday.

"The 37-year-old man driving the van was taken to hospital, where his injuries are described as serious.

"The 34-year-old man driving the HGV suffered minor injuries."
