Urgent foreign office travel advice issued for Greece after 60 are killed in wildfires

The Foreign Office have issued new travel advice for anyone jetting off to Greece after devastatating wildfires.

Holidaymakers have been warned to be aware and keep up to date with local media reports if they are heading to Greece.

At least 60 people have died in wildfires as Prime Minister Alexis Tspiras declared three days of national mourning.

According to officials, flames fanned by strong winds have devastated the seaside village of Mati, which is at the centre of the disaster.

Most of the victims were trapped in the village 40km (25 miles) north-east of Athens, and died either in their homes or their cars.

Following the emergency the British Government has issued the following advice.

A statement from the Foreign Office read: "There have been wildfires in a number of areas in southern Greece, including close to Athens.

"They have been confined to limited areas, but within those the impact has been high, with significant loss of life.

"Most visits to Greece, including to Athens, are unaffected; you should keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of the Greek authorities in affected areas.
