The former Spireites player was named as a the club's new manager on Christmas Eve and finds his new charges 18th in the table having lost their last six league matches.

But he is convinced they will begin to climb the table.

"I watched the team in the early part of the season and they play some good stuff," Wilson said.

"That gave me great belief that it's in them and it's about bringing that out of them again.

"I'm sure when they get a couple if wins, the confidence will flow back through them.

"There's no being over-ambitious and being unrealistic but I think it's a false position they find themselves in.

"We can only prove that when we start winning games."

While the club have not revealed the length of contract given to the 55-year-old, they have confirmed it is beyond the end of the season, contrary to early reports.

Wilson is likely to watch the Spireites' Boxing Day trip to Peterborough United from the stands before taking charge of the clash visit of Coventry City to the Proact on Monday.

Joining Chesterfield sees him reunite with chief executive Chris Turner, a former Owls team mate and his CEO when in charge of Hartlepool United.

He said: "I was asked to have a talk with Dave Allen (chairman) and Chris Turner to see how the land was lying.

"We got on famously.

"I know Chris from the past being an ex-team mate and colleague.

"I know how he works and he's a terrific fella so that was one of the reasons why I came to talk to them in the first place.

"I've also met Dave Allen quite a few times and again, we got on very well."

Wilson signed for the Spireites in 1980 and has lived in Chesterfield for more than 30 years so he described his return to the club as 'surreal.'

He said: "It brings back many fond memories for myself and obviously living in the area for the last 30 or so years, I've become very attached to it, certainly with the results over the years and the success they've had.

"I'm very privileged to be asked to come to be a part of it."

Wilson has managed for more than 1,000 games and guided both Hartlepool United and Barnsley to promotions, the latter of which saw him take them into the Premier League.
