UPDATE: Police confirm man was '˜slashed in head and robbed' near Sheffield flatsÂ

Police have confirmed a man was slashed in the head and robbed near a block of flats in Sheffield last night.Â

Officers said a 43-year-old man was attacked by 'persons unknown' in the South Street Park, close to the Park Hill flats, at about 11.20pm.

In a statement, South Yorkshire Police said: 'He suffered slash injuries to his head and was taken to hospital to receive treatment.

'The victim's injuries were not serious and he was sent home from hospital after treatment.

'A quantity of cash was taken during the incident.

'Enquiries are ongoing and officers are keen to hear from any witnesses. Please call 101 quoting incident number 961 of 26 August 2018.'

No arrests have been made yet.  

An eye witness, who sent in pictures of the incident, earlier told how he heard a commotion outside his flat.

He said: 'There was an argument and a fight which made me look outside and then I saw one of them stab the other in the head.

'He had blood pouring from a head wound and he may have been stabbed elsewhere as well but it was difficult to tell.

'I called an ambulance but there were lots of people from the flats who went down to help him.' 

A number of other residents took to Facebook to express their shock.

Images sent in by the eye witness show a man lying on the floor covered in blood being treated by paramedics.

Police were also called to the scene and the area was cordoned off. 

This latest incident comes after a spate of five fatal stabbings in as many months in the city this year.

In the most recent killing, 21-year-old Kavan Brissett lost his life several days after being stabbed in an alleyway off Langsett Walk, Upperthorpe, on Tuesday, August 14, just before 6.45pm.

Police have arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder.

Three boys, two aged 17 and one aged 16, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to rob.

All have been released on bail as detectives continue to investigate.
