Up to 500 jobs to go at steel giant Tata

Steel giant Tata is to axe up to 500 jobs at plants in Scunthorpe, Teesside and Workington.

The redundancies will hit the Indian-owned steel makers ‘Long Products’ business and will not affect its South Yorkshire-based engineering, or ‘speciality’ steels business, where the company is planning a £15 m investment to tap demand from new markets.

Tata says up to 340 jobs could go at Scunthorpe, 90 in Workington and 40 in Teesside with management and administrative roles mainly affected.
