University sports teams in Sheffield go head-to-head in annual Varsity competition

Sports teams from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University are to go head to head in a series of competitions.

The Sheffield Varsity event will see students taking part in 35 sports in 23 venues,including the opening ceremony at Sheffield Hallam University’s Sports Park at Tinsley and the ice hockey final at the Sheffield Arena.

Athletes from both universities use the event to showcase their talent with the aim of bringing home the Varsity trophy.

Flic Wilbraham, Sports Officer at the University of Sheffield Students’ Union said: “It’s Varsity’s 20th year, and what a year it has been for student sport.

“There are more athletes than ever competing, so this is certainly going to be the best Sheffield Varsity yet.”

“Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union Sports Officer, Emily Wilkes said: “Varsity is a perfect way to celebrate and showcase the fantastic athletes we have at Hallam.

“To me, Varsity is not just a competition. It’s the time to show your true passion for both your sport and your university. Competing in Varsity is a privilege and anyone who has competed knows how much blood, sweat and tears goes into winning.”
